چکیده

--Partnerships between research scientists and land man agers can facilitate the application of research findings. Successful partnerships developed between Rocky Mountain Station scien tists and the Southwestern Region staff have been involved in addressing riparian-stream interactions. These successful partner ships involve several interpersonal and organizational consider ations. Examples and Keys to successful partnerships are de scribed.

Influence of Valley Floor Landforms on Stream Ecosystems

USDA Forest Service Gen. Tech. Rep. PSW-110. 1989. 3 Riparian zones occur at interfaces — ecological interfaces between different ecosystems and conceptual interfaces between different scientific disciplines. The plethora of definitions and delineations of riparian zones are inconsistent, confusing, and often contradictory, reflecting the diversity of disciplines, perspectives, and objectives f...

The utility of stream habitat and biota for identifying potential conflicting forest land uses: Montane riparian areas

Rinne, J.N., 1990. The utility of stream habitat and biota for identifying potential conflicting forest land uses: Montane riparian areas. For. Ecol. Manage., 33/34: 363-383. Investigations since 1960 on the effects of land-management practices on riparian-stream systems often have produced contradictory results. Inconsistencies have occurred, in part, because of efforts that have not been tota...

Mature and old-growth riparian forests: structure, dynamics, and effects on Adirondack stream habitats.

Riparian forests regulate linkages between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, yet relationships among riparian forest development, stand structure, and stream habitats are poorly understood in many temperate deciduous forest systems. Our research has (1) described structural attributes associated with old-growth riparian forests and (2) assessed linkages between these characteristics and in-st...

New Forestry Principles from Ecosystem Analysis of Pacific Northwest Forests.

Forest management practices on Federal lands in the Pacific Northwest of the United States have been the center of intense controversy. Conflicting value systems, new information, and new perspectives have fueled the debate over the balance between timber production and preservation of natural ecosystems. In this paper we consider examples from three aspects of forest management: (1) management...

Assessing the Potential Impacts to Riparian Ecosystems Resulting from Hemlock Mortality in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is spreading across forests in eastern North America, causing mortality of eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis [L.] Carr.) and Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana Engelm.). The loss of hemlock from riparian forests in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) may result in significant physical, chemical, and biological alterations to stream environments. ...
